SUMMER 2010
EVIDENCE FOR 8 WEEKS OF USING MY ENGLISH
WEEK 1:
This week I started reading a book my dad handed to me called Kane and Able. This book is written by Jeffrey Archer and it’s a special edition from its 30th anniversary. It became a number one New York Times best seller. It is divided into eight parts and this week I read part one from page 3-212. This book centralizes around the life of two boys each from completely different parts of the world. Waldek Koskiewicz; born in the wild in Slonim Poland, found by a trapper and lived in a very poor family and William Kane , born from a rich family in Boston Massachusetts, and his father Richard being a chairman in an important bank. What do these boys of completely different worlds have in common? They were born the same day the same year. They live and suffered through different problems each by different magnitude and adapted to their life style but as the story evolves they end up being similar. In conclusion this book is very interesting because the author interprets 2 different boys in different scenery, situations, and places but manages to show us similarities between them. It is interesting to read how the boy’s later men relate and connect. How a boy from Poland and another from Boston both having difficult and complicated lives meet and the story relates. The author communicated similarities n the boys personalities but also showed us different ways to use that same personality’s n each specific situation. Unexpected events occur as the book evolves and I’m continuing to read to see where it leads. (266)
WEEK 2: This week I saw all the series of a TV show called heroes. Heroes have 4 seasons and this week I saw all of season three with my cousins. This series is about humans with special abilities and all of them look for answers. They discovered they were not borne like this but injected with a formula that caused these inhuman abilities. Characters from different part of the worlds all meet in New York because here is the center of the project. Season 3 talks more about other people trying to recreate the formula to create more abilities and how others wish to stop it. Some believe reveling their secret is the best thing to do while others sacrifices themselves to keep it from the world to discover. My cousins would come to my house or I would go to theirs to watch heroes. We would have sleepover and watch the show for the whole night with snack. We managed to finish the whole seasons in this short amount of time and during it we had a lot of fun. (180) WEEK 3:
This week I continued reading part two of my book about Kane and able by Jeffrey Archer. In this part of the book William and Able still have not met but both continue to show similarities between them. William was accepted to Harvard and in Harvard got into special and privileges groups. Abel began working and went to study and to practice his English in the Columbian university. Both very intelligent continue making money in every opportunity they could. They are now much older but still have all their life ahead of them. This book is full of adventure from where these boys were born to where I am now and I predict it will be until they die. Part two was a lot shorter than part one with only fifty pages but all full of excitement and events about their collage life. (143) WEEK 4: This week I traveled to Paris, France. This city is beautiful its entire structure is perfectly planed and every building has beautiful architecture and detail. The city was full of history and every place has a story to tell. I practiced my English here because when I tried to communicate with other people I talked in English because of my lack of communicating in French. I would also pick tour guides that explained in English and I used headphones with an English narrator. I visited many highlights of Paris like the Eiffel tower, the Louvre museum, Notre Dame, les invalids; arch of triumph as many other sites. In The Louvre museums we saw a lot of its highlights like the Mona Lisa and the Venus de Milo. The Mona Lisa is a very small painting compared to other huge paintings the tour guide showed us. The Venus de Milo was a very ancient Greek sculpture. I saw many of art from the time of the French emperor, Napoleon and a lot of sculptures. The museum was huge, it was in its time a palace, it contained items of every part of the world. I listened to the explanation of some exhibitions trough my headphones and the most important ones were told by the guide. The catholic church of Notre Dame was beautiful with detail in every place you saw. I walked around the church observing all the rich architecture, decoration and history found inside the temple. I also went up like 50 stairs to get to the top of the cathedral and saw all of Paris from the top it was breathtaking. I would also ride in a tour sightseeing bus were the guide would explain every place we saw and a piece of its history. (296) WEEK 5: I went from Paris to Rome during this week. Rome was beautiful and just as Paris full of history everyplace you saw. I also took one of the sightseeing buses here in Italy to view the city. We went to the Trevi Fountain where I made a wish. The fountain was very big and it had an extreme amount of detail. One of my favorite things about Rome apart from the delicious food was the Vatican City. We went in an English tour where they us the Sistine chapel, St. Peters basilica and the tombs of the popes. This was in the smallest city of the world and everything was beautiful. The Sistine chapel had frescos all over, painted by Michelangelo and this is where the popes vote. The narrator told us the stories behind the paintings that fascinated me. Later we saw the popes tombs were my mom cried when she saw John Paul II tomb. The basilica of St. Peters was huge and amazing it gave me Goosebumps when I entered. It was decorated with beautiful sculptures and mosaics. Its dome is made of gold and it’s the largest Catholic Church in the world. With our guide we later went to the roman coliseum where they explained us its history its construction it uses and its destruction. Room was beautiful and only walking in the streets and eating gelatos was incredible.(235)
WEEK 6: This week I traveled from Italy to visit my cousin in London here I practiced my English because I talked to her mostly in that language. I communicated in English throughout the city, to order my food to ask for direction and listening to tours and to my cousin all day. In London I visited the Buckingham palace and saw the red uniformed soldiers. We mostly walked in streets with my family and went to relax in the beautiful parks. I also visited big Ben and the London Bridge. In the bridge we bought a tour that took us to the top of the bridge. We did something similar in the London eye where it is like a huge Ferris wheel that allows us to see London from the top. That was a beautiful and relaxing ride. One of the nights there in London we went to the theater to watch Oliver. Oliver is a famous typical English play about an orphan that follows the wrong steps and later becomes rich and with a family. The theater was a very beautiful experience and the songs were very catchy and nice. (190)
WEEK 7: In London this week was the weekend of formula1 where I went to enjoy the race. We went to the circuit of Silverstone on Saturday and Sunday. Saturday was the qualifying to see where the driver’s position would be to start the race. Sunday was the actual race and it was super fun my dad had grabbed great seats very close to the circuit where I could see two curves and a full strait. I was also in front of the television to understand better and to the speakers where I could hear the English narrator explaining the race. Te driver I most support is called Fernando Alonso which is a Spaniard; he qualified great in second place but had trouble in the race. He is a Ferrari car so I became Ferrari. In the race he was punished and a mess happened with him and another car this mad him loose many spots abolishing any hopes for him to win the race. Mark Webber an Australian, I also like won the race and I was excited for him. I remember I started supporting him when he was an underdog and had no hope for arriving first in the race and here I was watching him win the British grand prix. Lewis Hamilton and Jensen Button both drive a Mc Lauren were both British drivers so the crowd was wild about them, they did finish in a good spot in their hometown race. After the race we went around the circuit where it was full of life restaurants and stores of formula one, there I bought my hat and shirt of Ferrari. (272)
WEEK 8:
Returning from London we went to Atlanta. My mom has a gift rote here in Honduras called Rincones and she goes to shop for her merchandise in this Americas mart show that is held in Atlanta each year. This year my sister and I accompanied my mother to the show to help her pick stuff for her store. Here we came to work and I communicated and made orders in English. We also grabbed catalogs to choose from. The show has three buildings and about eighteen floors each building. We did all of them and even though it was super tying with a lot of walking I had fun. I learned more about what my mother does and see how stores are managed. Here the spare days we had in Atlanta we used them to shop and just beside our hotel was a very big shopping mall lucky for us. (150) EXTRA
During all of summer I have seen many movies but this last week was extreme I saw about a movie each day and some days two. The movies I saw were my sister’s keeper, extraordinary measures, death at the funeral, lovely bones, planet 51, the fourth kind, precious, remember me and clash of the titans. I really enjoyed all of them and all were very different to each other. My sisters keeper, extraordinary measures, lovely bones, precious and remember me made me cry, they were great and touching movies. Death at a funeral was a comedy, planet 51 were cartoons and the fourth kind was a suspense movie but really weird. I enjoyed them also because I always sawed them with a lot of people some with all my friends and the others with my family. I also went to the movies to see Knight and Day by Cameron Diaz and tom Cruise. It was really fun and entertaining. (158)
